word about the fiscal cliff. the dow lost 158 points, it is currently a five day losing streak in its longest since july. the nasdaq reported 25 points. >> banks rack up a record to $10.7 billion in fines in 2012. that includes what the banks paid to u.s. and state of 40's-but it does not include the billions more paid to european regulators. most of the fines were related to improper mortgage practices. >> making interstate phone calls could soon get cheaper. for prison inmates. prison call systems are different than normal pay phones. a typical 50 minute conversation current cost an average of $16. that is largely due to fees that

francisco on december 9th. a man was killed-and a woman beaten. prosecutors say six people-including katharcatherin uong-also known as " killer "-forced themselves into the victim's home shooting the man and leaving the woman for dead. the defendants are said to appear in court in january. >> chevron has received the ok to move forward with plans to repair the crude unit that burst into flames at its richmond refinery in august. is in a huge fireball into the air and sent thousands of people to local hospitals. as kron 4 news and dan kerman reports, chevron will be able to use a type of pipe created a lot

>> in national mills. it has been a bloody year in chicago. authorities said the city has seen 500 murders happened in 2012. if chicago hit a milestone last my what a 40 year-old man was shot in the head while he was standing outside of a convenience store in the west side neighborhood. so far, no suspects have been arrested in the case. authorities said that the city's homicide rate is up by 17% this year. >> new york city police are looking for the woman they said showed that men in front of an oncoming subway train and killed him. if police in new york released a sketch of the woman. she was also seen on security video running from the station. witnesses said she

knows. a driver is recovering from a major injuries following a solo car crash in calloused though the last night. the chp said that the car crashed into a tree near silverado trail and pick it road just after 11:00 p.m.. emergency crews responding to the scene to help extricate the driver, who was trapped inside the vehicle. if the driver was taken to a hospital to be treated for major injuries. the cause of the crash has not been released. >> firefighters have extinguished a one alarm fire that damaged a house in san jose late friday night. fire crews responding to a report of a fire at home and the 2100 block of carbide weighed just after 9:30 p.m.. firefighters were able to get the fire under control about an hour later. no injuries were reported in the cause the fire is still

>> nasa's and new is mars rover is gearing up for a road trip in the new year. but first, curiosities first priority will be to test out its drill. part size of road work landed in march over the summer. since then, it has been taking it slow. if curiosity is expected to start a drive to a mountain in mid february after drilling is complete. scientists predict it will take nine months to get there with stops along the way. the rover is on a two- year mission to determine whether the landing site could have been favorable for life. >> the space shuttle " atlantis " is under wraps in florida. nasa put 16,000
